Another view looking from Eaton Road towards Coventry station showing an open top tram at the terminus. The station building is seen after the 1901-3 extensions with the Refreshment room sign being the only one visible. Other than the tram which is a later model to the one shown in image 'lnwrcov646', all the other traffic is horse drawn. The number of children in the photograph carrying news agent bags would seem to indicate that they are collecting newspapers for delivery. The vehicle on the right of the tram behind the figure of a man is probably a Hansom cab, a kind of horse-drawn carriage designed and patented in 1834 by Joseph Hansom, an architect from York. The vehicle was developed and tested by Hansom in Hinckley, Leicestershire, England. Originally known as the Hansom Safety Cab, its purpose was to combine speed with safety, with a low centre of gravity that was essential for safe cornering. Hansom's original design was heavily altered by John Chapman to improve its practicability, but retained his name..
