Midland Railway 3F 0-6-0 No 3531 photographed at Bournville on Sunday 31st August 1919

Midland 0-6-0 No 3531 is seen on a siding at Bournville on Sunday 31st August 1919. The well cleaned appearance of what was only a freight engine is a credit to the shed. It would have been painted black. Originally No 2345, it was built by Neilson & Company of Glasgow in 1897. The Midland assigned it power class 2 in 1905, renumbered it No 3531 in 1907, then rebuilt it with a larger 'H' boiler to make it power class 3 in 1908. Bournville was probably its home depot in 1919 and was definitely so in 1920. The LMS were responsible for rebuilding it with a 'G7' Belpaire boiler in 1923 and classified it 3F in 1928. BR renumbered it No 43531 in October 1948. Saltley was its home depot in years 1948-52. Transferred to Wellingborough in 1952, then on to Bedford in 1955, it was finally withdrawn in October 1959.
