SMJ Locomotives: smjsa59c
This close up of image 'smjsa59' shows the replacement
turntable and shed office. The white painted turntable walls would be required
for the dark foggy nights of winter as there appears to be little lighting
except for very tall gas lamp by the office. The concrete fence posts are
offset by several feet to allow the enginemen to turn the table by their
unaided efforts. The unique relationship with flowers and railwaymen continues
as can be seen by the flowerbed in front of the office.
The loco coaling facility is to the right consisting of a
side sheet and cantilevered cover providing minimal protection from inclement
weather. The coaling procedure required the shed staff to load the coal
directly from the wagon into the tender or the bunker of the locomotive.
