This close up of image 'smjsa56' shows SMJ 2-4-0T No 1 with its paint work gleaming in the sun was one of several Beyer Peacock tank locomotives purchased by the E&WJR. The short passenger trains did not require any significant locomotive power and the introduction of 0-6-0 tender locomotives on the line was motivated by the need to handle through goods traffic.
