Ex-E&WJR 0-6-0 No 4 is seen at Stratford on Avon station whilst at the head of a short passenger service to Towcester. Built by Beyer Peacock in 1885 then rebuilt in 1898 prior to being withdrawn in 1929 No 4 out lasted most of the more modern SMJ locomotive stock being withdrawn by the LMS in 1929 by which time it had been renumbered by the LMS, No 2302 in 1923 and then No 2397 shortly before it was scrapped. In addition to the distinctive Victorian characteristic of a curved outside-curved frame, the locomotive has a Westinghouse brake pump located behind the leading driving wheel and large sand boxes above the bufferbeam. Dick Riley and Bill Simpson wrote in their book on the line, 'This engine was fitted with both Westinghouse and continuous vacuum brake in SMJ days. The locomotive livery would be dark brown at this time with yellow lining, the black livery came after the purchase of LNWR engines. The coach livery seen here was lower panels painted brown; a shade very similar to the LNWR, with the upper panels light primrose'
