Stratford on Avon Station: smjsa53a
Close up of image 'smjsa53' showing the replacement SMJ
signal box viewed from the East end of Stratford on Avon station. The small
corrugated hut to the right of the signal box was where the SMJ fire-engine
shed stood. This housed the Merryweather steam fire engine which cost
£115 in 1909. The fire-engine comprised a vertical boiler and pump
mounted on two large wheels, with an iron bar shaped in the manner of shafts of
a rickshaw to enable it to be moved to the scene of the fire. Arthur Jordan
commented that it "looked very impressive with its highly polished brasswork,
gleaming red paintwork and a column of smoke and steam rising confidently from
its chimney pipe".
