LMS Route: The Shakespeare Route
Kineton Station: smjk26
Looking towards Fenny Compton probably in the late 1920s or
early 1930s. This view shows the height of the platform to be higher at the
Stratford upon Avon end of the station indicating that it was built as an
extension to the original platform. This was a common sight on stations built
in the early to late 19th century as early trains were both short and had
carriages designed to be accessed from a lower level whilst by the turn of the
century trains were both longer with much more substantial coaching stock. As
coaching became bigger so the floor level became higher to accommodate more
substantial frames and wheel sets.
Consequently platforms required extending and were built to
the latest profile required by the parent railway. Kineton was initially a
temporary terminus with the first train arriving on 1st June 1871 and as can be
seen in image 'smjk85' the train was both short and
had carriages with a floor height comparable to the platform. The opening under
the signal box accommodated the many sets of point rodding and wires required
to control the pointwork and signals.
