Close up of image 'smjfc17' which shows the SMJ waiting room on the up platform. The main station facilities including the booking and parcels office were on the down platform. The station layout was dictated by its proximity to the GWR station which was the earlier of the two stations. The fire buckets seen on the front of the signal box were filled with sand as this was far more effective in putting out burning or smoldering embers. The box by the first poster is thought to contain a telephone although being adjacent to the signal box it would seem a little unusual.
