LMS Route: The Shakespeare Route

Ettington Station: smje88c

Close up showing an usual visitor to the line, a LNWR 0-6-0 Coal Engine

Close up of image 'smje88' showing the light engine, thought to be a LNWR 0-6-0 Coal Engine, standing opposite Ettington's signal box. The goods yard appears to be fenced off from the railway at the far end even to the point of a gate protecting the spur from the main line. The locomotive is standing on top of the boards covering the point rodding which crossed over between the two sets of rails. The locomotive is not travelling through otherwise the signalman could have directed him on to the down platform to make the hand over of the staff much easier. Its most likely that the locomotive is about to shunt the vehicles in the yard.

The nearest crossing was installed for the benefit of the signalman so that he could cross from the down to the up platform without using the crossing at the far end of the platform.
