LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Tamworth
Tamworth High Level Station: mrthl448
The Trent Valley structure was opened by the LNWR on 15th
September 1847 eight years after the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway
opened their station on 12th August 1839. Both the MR and the LNWR utilised the
station for their passengers and both displayed their company notice board
outside. The MR's platforms were located to the immediate right and the arched
windows seen on the first floor is in fact the connecting corridor to their
platforms.
Above on the right behind the furthest most horse drawn
carriage can be seen the Midland's free-standing sign for its booking office
whilst on the left fixed to the wall is a much smaller LNWR sign. Although
known as Tamworth High Level or Low stations to today's enthusiasts, the
stations were only so named in 1924 following the two companies absorption by
the LMS.
