LMS Route: Water Orton to Walsall
Sutton Park: mrspk341b
Ex-LMS Stanier 2-6-4T No 42448, running bunker first, is
seen blowing off steam whilst at the head of a Walsall to Birmingham local
train. Whilst still sporting the LMS initials on its tank sides the number has
had a 4 inserted prior to its LMS running number meaning the photograph was
taken in either 1948/9 or at the very latest in 1950.
Classified as 4MT No 42448 was a two-cylinder version of
Fowler's earlier and very successful parallel boiler locomotive. Number 42448
was built at Derby works to Lot 128 in June 1936 and lasted a little above a
quarter of a century in service being withdrawn from Trafford Park shed in
January 1962 to be scrapped by Derby works in Apr 1962.
