Saltley shed's 0-6-4T No 2038 was a member of the MR's 2000
class better known as a "Flatiron" and is seen here on a local passenger
service. Although the train is to a great extent masking the station building
it can be seen from the roof that its layout was similar to the stations along
the line. Where it differed, presumably reflecting its station being a town
facility, is that the extensions beyond the "wings" of the station are two
storey not single storey as seen at Streetly and Penns.
The locomotive's direction of travel is thought to be Sutton
Town to Birmingham because photographic evidence at Sutton Park shows tank
engines running round their trains after hauling the trains from Birmingham
facing the direction of travel. Number 2038 was built by Derby works in
September 1907 and lasted in service for 28 years before being withdrawn from
Saltley shed in August 1935 to be scrapped by Derby works in the same year.
