Ex-MR 1F 0-6-0T No 1777, still with original boiler
fittings, lies 'cold' waiting to be relit for another working week. The tool
box is clearly seen on the running plate and also of note are the prominent
sand boxes seen in front of and behind the leading and rear axles. Behind her
can be seen ex-MR 3F 0-6-0 No 3698 also coaled and watered ready to start duty
on the Monday. 28 Sept 1947
Number 1777 was built as a MR's 1377/1552 class design by
Derby works in December 1890 and lasted in service for 66 years being withdrawn
from Staveley (Barrow Hill) shed in March 1956 and scrapped shortly afterwards.
Number 3698 was built eleven years later in May 1901 by Sharp Stewart and it
too lasted in service until 1956 when it was withdrawn from Saltley in August
of that year.
