During the 1950s British Railways carried out a different modernisation programme than the one most remembered, the introduction of diesels. This modernisation programme parallel the introduction of the British Railways Standard range of locomotives and concentrated on improving facilities at sheds, including new MPDs and in the case above, new offices and facilities. As with the introduction of the new locomotives much of this investment was wasted with most facilities lasting only a very short time. 14th Nov 1958
