LMS 8F 2-8-0 No 8540 is seen standing ahead of LMS 6F5P 2-6-0 'Crab' No 2764 on one of the stabling roads in front of Saltley's No 3 roundhouse on 28th September 1947. Built by Darlington works to an order from the Railway Executive's in December 1944 No 8540 remained in service almost to the end of steam being withdrawn from Royston shed in October 1967 to be scrapped in May 1968 by J Cashmore of Great Bridge. LMS 6F5P 'Crab' 2-6-0 No 2764 was built at Crewe in July 1927 and remained in service until January 1962 when she was withdrawn from this shed, Saltley, and was also scrapped by J Cashmore of Great Bridge, but in April 1962.
