Ex-MR 2F 0-6-0 No 3063, and fellow MR '1357' class member No
2978, both stand out side the shed. Number 3063 was built by R Stephenson &
Co in April 1880 and lasted in service until withdrawn from Saltley shed in
September 1934 to be scrapped by Derby works.
In this view they are thought to be standing in the scrap
line due to both having a protective cover placed over the chimney to prevent
ingress of water. This protection was required because water could enter into
the cylinders through the exhaust pipes and rust the cylinders preventing the
locomotive from being moved under tow. Whilst the locomotives were going to be
scrapped an emergency could occur.
