The expansion of Saltley shed reflected the growth of the traffic arriving and departing from Birmingham. The land for the shed seen above was first acquired circa 1865 which according to Chris Hawkins and George Reeve in their book LMS Engine Sheds Volume Two led to 'Messrs Jeffrey Pritchard Ltd's tender of £14,622 15s 0d (Fourteen Thousand, Six hundred and Twenty-two Pounds fifteen shillings and no pence) being accepted on 16th April 1867 with Messrs Harrop Summerville Ltd providing the ironwork for £3,024 18s 11d (Three thousand and Twenty-four Pounds Eighteen Shillings and Eleven pence) with the shed opening the following year.
