Looking towards Water Orton from the Walsall end of the down platform as a local passenger service arrives at Penns station circa 1930s. The station building is similar to those built at Streetly, Sutton Park and Sutton Town with two large gables being connected by a large central waiting room. The station signage is not very prominent with just one visible on the fencing opposite. The station name board carries the legend 'Penns for Walmley'. The lettering is dark on a very light background which is neither a standard Midland or LMS standard colour scheme. LMS stations did not receive a standard painting scheme until 1936, a full thirteen years after the LMS was formed. Two light colours were introduced, 'cream' and 'Portland Stone' which were to be used with one of three darker shades, 'brown', 'red' and 'green'. The red was a dark shade similar to Midland read as used on LMS loco's and coaches, and the brown was very similar to the former LNWR colour.
