controlling Leicester bound traffic located on the Birmingham platform. The
position of the arms' spectacle plates confirm that they are lower quadrant
because the oil lamp was positioned opposite the arm when it was at danger
where a red spectacle plate was positioned with the light showing through.
The fall of the arm to the 7 o'clock position would raise
the green spectacle plate to be in front of the lamp to show green at night.
These lamps were in the care of the signalman who would be responsible for them
to be charged with oil, a task carried out in day light.
