LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Nuneaton

Nuneaton Abbey Street Station: mrna48a

Close up of image 'mrna48' looking through the over bridge carrying the Midland Road over the railway to join Tuttle Hill which lies to the left. An unidentified ex-LNWR 0-8-0 locomotive stands on a connecting road adjacent to the goods shed which is on the right out of view of the photographer. The line curving away to the right of the signal box is the line for Leicester and would start to climb in order to pass over the top of the Trent Valley line. The tracks to the left of the signal box was the Ashby & Nuneaton joint line. Pete Lee in his book 'The Railways of Nuneaton and Bedworth' recounts that the barrow crossing was not the official method of crossing between platforms. Unless needing assistance, when the station staff would assist, all passengers were expected to use the steps and the road bridge to cross over.
