Despite being in the second year of the war the timber open wagons seem reasonably clean although the first wagon has no visible owner markings. During the Second World War all wagons were effectively nationalised being taken over by the Railway Executive and could be deployed as it saw fit. This was an extension of the common user practice adopted by many wagon owners prior to the war. Common use meant that when the wagon had been deployed transporting a load from location A to location B instead of returning it empty to location A (which only incurred costs and generated no revenue) it could be used by the railway to move other goods for other owners to a different location. The principle being that with most people adopting the same practice costs would be significantly reduced. Photography was illegal during the war so any such photographs are rare and therefore very welcome in giving us a little knowledge on how the railways played their part in the ultimate victory.
