MR 2P 4-4-0 No 494 pilots another MR 4-4-0 near Northfield on 6th August 1921

MR 2P 4-4-0 No 494 and MR/LMS 4-4-0 No 688 doubleheaded make light work of an express near Northfield in 6th Aug 1921. Number 494 was built at Derby works in September 1897 and lasted in service until it was retired from Rhyl shed in November 1948 to be scrapped at Derby works circa 1949. Its BR running number was allocated but never applied.

The train locomotive is noted as No 688 on the reverse of the photograph, however the invaluable web site British Steam shows No 688 was an LMS locomotive built in October 1932 at Crewe works with a history that shows No 688 was retired from service from Hurlford shed in July 1959 before being cut up at Inverurie works in April 1961.
