As was common with all of the railway companies, the introduction of motorised transport was soon adopted as an alternative to horse-drawn traffic although it wasn't until the 1950s that they finally supplanted horse-drawn transport. In this view can be seen a Midland Railway's Austin petrol driven lorry at Lawley Street goods depot in 1916, the second year of the First World War. This vehicle is loaded up with what appears to be machined castings in this clearly posed photograph (otherwise the men would instinctively be looking at the camera). The Midland Railway operated the same deliver and collection service operated by the LNWR and GWR which involved delivering goods to customers in the morning and collecting their customer's goods for rail shipment in the afternoon.
