LMS Route: Evesham to Birmingham
Kings Norton station: mrkn277b
MR 2P 4-4-0 No 426 passes under the passenger foot bridge
through the station. A noticeable feature on all MR locomotives are the
protective plates fitted under the bufferbeam and in front of the bogie wheels.
This was due to the MR practice of double heading many of its passenger trains,
a consequence of its "small engine" policy resulting in trains too heavy for
one locomotive. Pilot locomotives picking up water at speed on troughs would
spray the following locomotive which would be vulnerable to the effects of
water on bearings etc.
Number 426 was built as a member of the MR 483 class by
Derby works in September 1896 and survived until withdrawn from Barrow Road
shed in Bristol during October 1957 to be scrapped by Derby works in November
1957.
