MR 4-4-0 No 426 passes under the passenger footbridge

MR 4-4-0 2P No 426 heading an up express service passes at speed under Kings Norton station's passenger footbridge. A noticeable feature on all MR locomotives are the protective plates fitted under the bufferbeam and in front of the bogie wheels. This was due to the MR practice of double heading many of its passenger trains, a consequence of its "small engine" policy resulting in trains too heavy for one locomotive. Pilot locomotives picking up water at speed on troughs would spray the following locomotive which would be vulnerable to the effects of water on bearings etc. Built as a member of the MR 483 class by Derby works in September 1896 No 426 survived until it was withdrawn from Barrow Road shed in Bristol during October 1957 to be scrapped by Derby works in November 1957.
