A two-car DMU stands in the up fast platform on its way from Redditch to New Street. In strict economic turns a lightweight two-car self-propelled train is much cheaper than the ex-MR 0-6-2T 'Flatiron' tank locomotives with two to four coaches behind the bunker or even later when Ivatt's and Riddles 2-6-2T tank engines took over but there is no comparison when one talks about atmosphere. Forty-five years after this photograph was taken the DMU still leaves me as cold as it did when I first saw them. 31st May 1962
