This close up of image 'mrk438' shows the station master's house against which the up platform ends. The two platform lamps in view are lit by an oil lamp placed inside a glass sided triangular shaped housing. Each lamp would require the staff to light it every night and to keep it constantly filled. In the early years, when even country stations like Kingsbury were generously staffed, the lot of cleaning and trimming the wicks was the responsibility of the most junior member of staff.
