LMS Route: Evesham to Birmingham
Evesham Station: mre556
LMS 2-6-0 Mogul No 42790 is still carrying a fitted freight
headcode despite being a light engine. Bob Essery suspects that the engine has
run forward from its train standing beyond the footbridge to take water. The
open wagon on the left is standing on the now truncated siding, the connection
with the running lines now removed. Access to the siding being via the goods
shed and the connection with the running lines seen in image 'mre552b'.
This class of locomotive was initially designed by Hughes
at Horwich works but on his retirement in 1925 the unfinished design was taken
over by Fowler and 'Midlandised' hence the narrow MR tender attached instead of
the intended wider L&Y inspired tender. Number 42790 was built at Crewe
works to order 5782 in October 1927 and remained in service until withdrawn
from Saltley shed in July 1963 for scrapping by J Cashmore of Great Bridge in
May 1964.
