LMS Route: Birmingham West Suburban Railway
Central Goods Yard: mrcgy129b
This close up of image 'mrcgy129' was included to show the
horse-drawn vehicles employed by the MR for delivering goods to its customers
or, just as frequently, its customers' customers. The concept of transport hubs
with centralised distribution points is therefore not a new or modern phenomena
it was at the heart of the railway transport system. The covered wagons (note
the rigidity of the covering over the hoops) were employed for the perishable
traffic whilst the open wagons were employed on traffic that either utilised
their own containers such as barrels or were non-perishable.
