LMS Route: Birmingham West Suburban Railway
Central Goods Yard: mrcgy129
The MR's Central Goods Yard seen circa 1895. The yard
handled both perishable and non-perishable traffic with the former using, but
not exclusively, the two-storey warehouse seen above. In addition to perishable
goods more valuable items would be stored too. The use of Bonded Warehouses
within goods yards was also very important as duty (tax) was not payable until
the goods had left the warehouse thereby minimising cash flow. The two items
most Bonded were tobacco and alcohol.
