LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Nuneaton
Castle Bromwich Station: mrcb31
LMS 4-6-0 No 6100 'The Royal Scot', originally No 6152 'The
Kings Dragoon Guardsman', at the British Industrial Fair which was located
adjacent to the station. The bell above the buffer beam was presented to the
locomotive during its tour of the USA as part of the Ohio & Baltimore
Railway's celebration. 1933
Number 6100 was built in June 1930 at Derby Works and
switched identities with No 6152 (being in the shops for maintenance) to take
part in the celebrations and tour of the USA. Neither locomotive reverted to
their original numbers retaining their adopted identities for life. Therefore
the original 6100 later carried the BR running number of 46152 and was
withdrawn from Carlisle in April 1965 and scrapped by Motherwell Machinery
& Scrap Co at their Inshaw Works in July of the same year.
The replacement No 6100 was built as No 6152 in August 1927
by North British Locomotive Company. In its new identity it carried the BR
running number 46100 and was withdrawn in October 1962 from Nottingham
(Midland) shed to be preserved.
Both locomotives were rebuilt by Stanier and classified as
'converted' locomotives, an accountancy practice that enabled the LMS to write
off 100% of the cost against its profit for the current year. A new locomotive
would be treated by the taxman as capital expenditure meaning the cost would be
written off over many years thereby increasing the amount of tax paid in the
current year.
