LMS Route: Birmingham West Suburban Railway

Bournville Shed: mrb676

Bournville Signal Box in colour seen from the access path to the engine shed on Wednesday 6th June 1956

Bournville Signal Box in colour seen from the access path to the engine shed on Wednesday 6th June 1956. The present double track main line was opened in 1885, diverging from the former single track branch at this point. The line joining it from the right is the northbound exit from the shed, opened in 1895. The Lifford Branch, seen here leaving the main line and passing behind the signal box, is the former route of the single track Birmingham West Suburban Railway. It followed the line of the Birmingham to Worcester Canal, here marked by the mature trees lining its far bank. The trees screen out the neighbouring factories. The houses to the right of the box are in Cotteridge. The larger building is probably a school.
