LMS Route: Evesham to Birmingham

Alvechurch Station: mralv608

Edwardian view of the station showing a young porter ready to load luggage on to the incoming train

Edwardian view of the station showing a young porter made ready to load the lady passenger's luggage on to the incoming train to Birmingham. According to the track plan in Bob Essery's book on the line, the nearest structure with light coloured horizontal boarding is the goods shed. The middle single-storey structure with two chimneys was the main passenger facilities comprising booking office, booking hall, ladies waiting room and toilets. The chimneys' size and location would indicate that the booking office is nearest the camera with the ladies waiting room off the booking hall sharing a chimney with a general waiting room located at the far end of the building and accessed from the gable end of the building and not from the platform.

The stationmaster's house is the two-storey structure at the far end of the platform whilst the square open roofed structure looks as if it was the gentlemen's toilets. It is unclear how the lampposts were lit by although the absence of any equipment to view seems to indicate that oil lamps were used and are currently removed for cleaning, filling and trimming. Whilst gas is a possibility it would require gas tanks to be delivered an expensive option for a small station even if Redditch Gas Works were one stop down the line.
