Looking towards Kenilworth and on towards Coventry. The large structure in the distance adjacent to the down (left) line signal is the water treatment plant for the locomotive shed and other watering points. The LMS had embarked on a major programme of installing such plants across the country as the problem of hard water causing limescale in boilers had been identified as a significant cause of boiler deterioration.

Boilers in hard water areas required significant rectification work as the limescale would in the course of time eat into stays and steel plating. The build up of sediment inside the boiler would also create hot spots within the boiler and firebox preventing the water from both cooling the plating as well reducing the heat raising capabilities of the boiler.
