The shed's closure allowed it to be used temporarily to store the Derby DMUs that were to be used locally. Driver training would have been carried out in advance of their introduction and in these days the unions insisted on a second man, the fireman, to be in the cab on the pretext of safety. This significantly nullified one of the advantages of operating these vehicles (I cannot out of prejudice call them trains) and was a contributing factor in making secondary routes vulnerable to the cost savings that Beeching instigated, namely closure of thousands of miles of lines.
