Note the LMS lettering on the cab side and the running number on the tender, a
Midland practice carried over initially into early LMS practice. Crewe was very
reluctant to adopt Derby practices and resisted as best they could often on the
pretext that they had to use existing supplies.
The problem with the engine's running number being on the
tender was when it went into the works for shopping. The tender never required
the same amount of time for repairs and therefore tenders were exchanged
between locomotives, a fact that resulted in fewer tenders being built than
locomotives.
