Ex-LMS 3P 2-6-2T No 44 is seen standing on the stabling roads in front of an otherwise empty Milverton shed in May 1948. The lack of other locomotives outside the shed, but note there are some inside, would indicate that the photograph was taken during the working week. The lighting to the stabling roads which also incorporate inspection pits is provided by gas lampposts which are painted white at the bottom for safety reasons. The ladders are required because the lamp would require to be lit manually as would turning them off in the morning. Built at Derby in March 1931, No 44 was to remain in service until November 1959 when it was withdrawn from Willesden Shed in London to be scrapped shortly afterwards at Crewe works.
