LMS Route: Rugby to Wolverhampton
Tile Hill Station: lnwrth716
Looking towards Coventry from the down platform with the
signal box on the right. The small structure on the right of this photograph
housed the waiting room and toilet facilities. As can be seen, from behind the
down waiting room a supporting wire crossed the track from a post to the top of
the up signal in order to stabilise the tall signal. The small outer building
adjacent to the signal box housed the toilet.
Both platforms were built in the 1860s when the practice was
to construct platforms at a lower height than were required later in the
century. To assist the elderly and other passengers that might require
assistance to step into a carriage the railway companies provided steps. A set
of three steps can be seen behind the bench. As recounted elsewhere on the site
this was my local station and I can clearly remember the porter releasing
homing pigeons from the down platform at least once a month.
