LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Lichfield

View of the cutting being constructed on the line to Lichfield near Sutton Coldfield. The steam navvy was so much more productive than the hundreds of navvies used in the pioneer days of railways. The trackwork seems in very good order bearing in mind its a contractor's 'temporary way' track. The use of spiked flat-bottom rail (no chairs evident) and the lack of ballast would seem to confirm that this was not 'permanent way' track.C1882
