LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Lichfield
Sutton Coldfield: lnwrsc90
This view of the first station when Sutton Coldfield was the
terminus on the line to Birmingham via its junction at Aston. In the station,
running bunker first, is 'McConnell' 0-4-2T No 734 on a seven-coach local
train. As can be seen the station was new at the time opening June 1862 .
Points to note are the tracks with the ballast covering the sleepers, a common
feature of railways in the middle to late 19th century, the signal which
clearly has to be operated by hand and the driver who is, typically, wearing a
white jacket and trousers.
