LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Harborne

As Rotton Park Road was the only passing place on the line
staffs were required as part of controlling the sections either side of the
station. The staffs seen above are marked Harborne Junction and Rotton Park
Road.
Multiple staffs were required to allow for the vagaries of
timetables that might require several trains to pass in the same direction and
therefore there was no return trip to return the staff. These staffs required
the signalman at the the end of the each section to release them, a safety
procedure to ensure errors did not occur.
