The LNWR Signal Gantry prior to the construction of the GC bridge carrying the new Great Central Railway London Extension over the LNWR mainline to London. The signal gantry was built with two sets of signals, the top set repeating the commands given to the lower set. The was because the GC bridge passed behind at the same level as the lower set and therefore in certain situations they would be difficult to see. The reason the LNWR did not do away with the bottom set and just have the top set was because of fog. On foggy occasions in the days of coal fired homes, factories and trains, visibility was frequently poor during Autumn and Winter even in the daytime so the top set wouldn't be visible. C1890s
