In this close up of image 'lnwrrm861' showing an 8F at the head of a down goods passing under the colour light signals whilst two down expresses draw into the station. The colour light signalling was installed just prior to the Second World War. Whilst it was obviously more efficient, to the writer, they are too utilitarian lacking the atmosphere of semaphore signals. The need to ensure that was a plentiful supply of water for the locomotives can be judged by the fact that there are four water columns in this view. One is on the left in the distance near the footbridge, another is next to the colour light's right-hand column. A third is by the locomotive on the down line and the fourth is next to the 7 plank wagon on the right.
