LNWR 2-2-2 Problem class No 837 'Faerie Queen' stands at the head of an up train whilst the driver oils the bearings

LNWR 2-2-2 Problem class No 837 'Faerie Queen' stands at the head of an up train whilst the driver oils the bearings on the large driving wheel prior to departure circa 1904. This class of locomotive, designed by John Ramsbottom, was introduced in 1859. The class took its name from the first of the '7 foot 6 inch Single' locomotives, No 184 Problem. This name is a mathematical connotation and had been applied originally to a withdrawn Trevithick 2-4-0 goods engine. The class incorporated all of the usual Ramsbottom features: chimney top, safety valves and screw reverser, horizontal smoke box door, no cab, no brakes on the engine and no top lamp socket. Francis Webb, LNWR's Locomotive Superintendent from 1871 to 1903, has carried out a number of improvements not least the addition of a cab. has The class is also known by one of the famous members of the class ‘Lady of the Lake’ as it was awarded a bronze medal at the International Exhibition in 1862.
