LMS 4-6-2 Princess Royal Coronation class No 6247 'City of Liverpool' is seen standing at the head of a down express

LMS 4-6-2 Princess Royal Coronation class No 6247 'City of Liverpool' is seen standing at the head of a down express at the station circa 1947-8. Built by Crewe works in September 1943 No 6247 remained in service until May 1963 when it withdrawn from Kingmoor shed to be scrapped by Crewe works in July 1963. Barry Freeman writes, "This locomotive is standing next to No 4 box and was one of those painted wartime black from new. It looks as though the photograph was taken quite soon after it was built as the casing seems to be in very good condition and is probably quite clean. The engine never carried the red with gold stripes livery and was only streamlined for about three and a half years, the casing being removed and smoke deflectors fitted in May 1947. "
