LMS 2-8-0 8F No 8629 stands at the head of an up goods train alongside LMS 0-6-0 4F No 4077 whilst waiting for the right of way

LMS 2-8-0 8F No 8629 stands at the head of an up goods train alongside LMS 0-6-0 4F No 4077 whilst waiting for the right of way. They are both standing on the avoiding lines outside the train shed which was equipped with water columns lit by gas lampposts. Number 8629 was built as part of the Ministry of Supply's requirements during the war by Brighton works in June 1943. Serving until August 1966 No 8629 was retired from service when withdrawn from Saltley shed in December 1966 to be scrapped by J Cashmore of Great Bridge. LMS 0-6-0 4F No 4077 was however built by the North British Locomotive company to order 23274 in November 1925 and remained in service until March 1960 when withdrawn from Stoke-on-Trent shed for scrapping by Gorton works in April 1961.
