Close up of image 'lnwrrm1028' showing the simple manual method of coaling locomotives at Rugby's shed. The height of the chute, which is seen in its raised position, indicates that the LNWR adopted a different coaling process to the GWR who transferred the coal from the wagon to small wagons which ran on rails to be tipped in to the tender or bunker (see image 'gwrls817'). The LNWR practice at Rugby was to position the chute at about three feet in height above the bottom of the coal wagon - a height which was comfortable for the labourers to shovel coal direct from the wagon, whether full or nearly empty, on to the chute so that it could then slide into the tender or bunker.
