Looking across the tracks of the sub-depot towards the
Signal Department building with the passenger station behind. Prior to the
installation of the coaling plant coal was stored in coal stacks at various
points across the yard. There was always a very large amount stacked because of
the need to avoid any issues relating to industrial action by miners etc. Note
the loco coal wagons in the foreground are from all the post-grouping companies
except the LMS itself reflecting the advantages of adopting a 'common user'
policy.
