Panoramic view of the shed showing the main depot and the sub-depot or garage. The LMS introduced a modernisation scheme in 1933 intended to improve the productivity and efficiency of locomotive servicing. Each geographical area would be assigned a main shed, termed 'concentration' depots, with several sub-sheds or 'garages'. According to Hawkins & Jeeves 'the 'concentration' shed was supplied with an entire range of new equipment' designed to carryout routine examination and repairs. This left the sub-sheds with the minimum of duties associated with servicing. As the main depot, Rugby had both a 'concentration' shed and a 'garage', the former providing the services required for supporting its sub-sheds. The term 'garage' encapsulates exactly the function of the other shed at Rugby and at the other sub-sheds in the area which were; Coventry, Market Harborough, Peterborough, Seaton, Stamford and Warwick.
