Nuneaton yard with ex-LMS 0-6-0 4F No 44292, ex-LMS 2-8-0 8F Nos 48658 & 48020 and ex-LNWR 0-8-0 class G2a No 49342 standing on shed all coaled and ready for their next turn of duties. This photograph was probably taken on a Sunday as traffic demands were significantly less - the working week being Monday to midday Saturdays for most factories and collieries. Built as LMS No 4292 at Derby works in January 1927 No 44292 remained in service until August 1963 when it was withdrawn from Workington shed to be scrapped after storage in July 1964 by TW Ward Ltd of Devonshire Dock in Barrow-in-Furness. The two Stanier's 8Fs Nos 48658 and 48020 had different origins, No 48658 being built at Eastliegh works in November 1943 and No 48020 being built at Crewe in February 1937. Both remained in service until 1965 when No 48658 was withdrawn from Crewe South shed in July 1965 and No 48020 was withdrawn from Northampton shed in August 1965. Whilst No 48658 was scrapped by November 1965 by Birds of Long Marston, No 48020 was placed in store and was not scrapped until February 1966 by J Buttigieg of Newport. The ex-LNWR locomotive No 49342 was built at Crewe works in September 1918 and remained in service until October 1961 when it was withdrawn from Nuneaton shed to be stored finally being scrapped during October 1962 by J Cashmore of Great Bridge.
