Built to an LMS design but by BR Ivatt Class 4 Mogul No
43025 was stable mate to classmates Nos 43024 and 43025. The class were all
fitted with the characteristic high running plate that led to their nickname
"doodlebug", a reference to the small pilotless V1's of World War II.
The design had been heavily influenced by US practice seen
as a result of the large number of US built locomotives used or stored in the
UK prior to D Day. The high running board was to provide easy access to the
mechanical parts of the locomotive whilst other elements of the design,
self-cleaning smokebox and rocking grate were designed to reduce the labour
intensive elements of preparing and disposing of locomotives each day.
No 43025 was built at Horwich Works in January 1948 and
lasted only 18 years in service being withdrawn from Workington shed in
September 1965 and scrapped in January 1966 by the Motherwell Machinery &
Scrap Co at their Inshaw Works. C1957
